Before we were a tea company, we were a word. Bohío (pronounced boh-EE-oh) is the name the Taíno gave their homes, and we borrowed it because it describes exactly how we want to make tea.
The Taíno home
A bohío was a round dwelling with a high, conical roof of woven palm thatch, built to breathe in the Caribbean heat and shed tropical rain. The Taíno built two main structures: the bohío, the everyday family home, and the larger caney, the rectangular dwelling of the cacique (chief). Both were constructed entirely from what the island provided: royal palm, cane, vines, and wood. No imported materials. No excess. Just intelligent design shaped by the land.
Built from what the land provides
That last line is the whole philosophy. The bohío was not decorated to impress; it was built to shelter, using materials at hand, with techniques refined over generations. It was open to breezes and community, simple on purpose. In a world of maximalism, we find that restraint radical.
What it means for our tea
We make tea the way a bohío is built. Whole loose leaves, never dust. Real botanicals, never artificial flavoring. Small batches blended with intention. You can see every ingredient in the cup because there is nothing to hide. Like the dwelling, the tea is simple, open, and made from what the earth provides.
An invitation, not just a name
In Taíno villages, the bohío was where life happened: meals, stories, rest, family. Naming our company for it is an invitation. Step inside. Sit down. Stay a while. Every blend we make is built for that moment: the pause, the cup, the breath.
